The AtlasIED ALX-16D is a digitally steerable 16-speaker column array loudspeaker designed to improve speech intelligibility and sound coverage in large, highly reverberant, and acoustically challenging spaces. Part of the AtlasIED Aimline ALX-D Series, the ALX-16D uses advanced DSP, individual amplifier channels, and digital beam steering to precisely direct sound toward the listening area while reducing unwanted reflections from walls, ceilings, and other hard surfaces.
With 16 individual 4-inch neodymium full-range drivers, 16 DSP channels, and 16 Class-D amplifier channels, the ALX-16D provides detailed control over the vertical sound field. Its digitally adjustable vertical coverage and steering make it particularly well suited for transportation terminals, houses of worship, museums, lecture halls, conference facilities, and other large commercial spaces where conventional loudspeaker systems can struggle with reverberation.
Digital Beam Steering for Difficult Acoustic Environments
The ALX-16D is designed for spaces where reflections and reverberation can make speech difficult to understand. Instead of relying solely on physical loudspeaker positioning, the system uses digital processing to electronically control the vertical direction of the sound.
The vertical opening angle can be adjusted from 5° to 40°, while vertical steering can be adjusted from +40° to -40°. This allows system designers to aim acoustic energy toward the intended audience and away from reflective surfaces.
The result is more controlled coverage and improved direct-to-reverberant performance in acoustically challenging environments.
16 Individually Controlled Loudspeaker Drivers
The ALX-16D contains 16 4-inch neodymium full-range transducers, with each driver assigned its own DSP and amplifier channel. This individual control provides the processing resolution necessary for precise beam shaping and steering.
The system supports multi-beam operation, allowing the loudspeaker to address different areas of a venue when a single conventional coverage pattern is not sufficient. The acoustic center of the beam can also be adjusted along the length of the column for additional coverage control.
Dante, AES67, AES/EBU and Analog Connectivity
Network and professional audio connectivity are built directly into the ALX-16D. The loudspeaker provides:
- 2 × Dante® / AES67 inputs
- 2 × analog line inputs
- 2 × AES/EBU inputs
- IP-based network control
- External UDP control
- 2 × GPIO connections
With IP connectivity and Dante built into the loudspeaker, the ALX-16D can be integrated into networked commercial audio systems without requiring the external interfaces and network bridges often associated with digitally steerable loudspeaker systems.
Integrated DSP, Amplification and System Control
The ALX-16D combines loudspeaker processing and amplification within the column itself. Its DSP operates at 96 kHz / 24-bit and provides tools including FIR filtering, 10-band IIR filtering, dynamic EQ, limiting, gain, delay, and 24 configurable presets.
Integrated software provides real-time control, beam-steering optimization, telemetry, diagnostics, and automatic configuration. The ALX-D platform can also integrate with AtlasIED GLOBALCOM® and GCK advanced notification software.
120° Horizontal Coverage
The ALX-16D provides a 120° horizontal dispersion pattern while allowing the vertical coverage to be digitally adjusted. This combination provides broad horizontal coverage with controlled vertical directivity.
The specified typical throw is approximately 130 feet (40 meters), making the ALX-16D suitable for large spaces where sound must travel significant distances while maintaining controlled coverage.
Modular Column Array Design
The ALX-D Series uses a modular approach in which identical modules can be combined to create longer column arrays. AtlasIED states that the ALX-D models can be configured into arrays of up to approximately 5 meters (16 feet).
This modular design can simplify transportation, installation, and system design compared with shipping and handling a single extremely long loudspeaker enclosure.
Slim Design for Architecturally Sensitive Installations
The ALX-16D features a narrow aluminum enclosure designed to blend into architecturally sensitive environments. The standard finish is white (RAL 9016), with other RAL colors available as options.
An optional IP64-rated configuration is available for installations where additional environmental protection is required.

Why Choose the AtlasIED ALX-16D?
The AtlasIED ALX-16D is designed for applications where conventional loudspeaker systems may produce excessive reflections or inconsistent coverage. Its combination of digital beam steering, individual DSP and amplification, multi-beam operation, and network audio connectivity gives system designers much greater control over where sound is delivered.
For large transportation facilities, houses of worship, museums, government buildings, lecture halls, and other acoustically difficult spaces, the ALX-16D provides a sophisticated solution for achieving controlled coverage and improved speech intelligibility while maintaining a slim, architecturally friendly appearance.
