The AtlasIED ALX-48D is a digitally steerable column loudspeaker built for installations where speech intelligibility, controlled coverage, and precise sound placement are critical. Using individual DSP processing and amplification for each of its 48 transducers, the ALX-48D allows system designers to electronically direct sound toward the listening area while reducing unwanted energy on reflective walls, ceilings, and other surfaces.
Part of the AtlasIED Aimline Series, the ALX-48D is designed for large and acoustically difficult spaces such as transportation terminals, houses of worship, lecture halls, government facilities, museums, and conference centers. Its digitally controlled vertical coverage makes it possible to optimize sound for different room layouts without physically repositioning the loudspeaker.
Precise Beam Steering for Challenging Spaces
Traditional column speakers rely heavily on their physical installation angle to control vertical coverage. The ALX-48D takes a different approach, using digital beam steering to electronically adjust where sound is directed.
The system provides a variable vertical opening angle from 5° to 40° and digital steering from +40° to -40°. This allows integrators to target specific seating areas, balconies, platforms, or other listening zones while helping minimize reflections from hard architectural surfaces.
The ALX-48D can also create multiple independent beams, providing additional flexibility when one loudspeaker needs to serve more than one listening area.
48 Individually Processed Transducers
Inside the ALX-48D are 48 4-inch neodymium full-range transducers. Each transducer has dedicated DSP and Class-D amplification, giving the system detailed control over the acoustic output.
This architecture allows the loudspeaker to shape its output electronically rather than relying solely on mechanical aiming. The result is a highly configurable solution for applications where consistent speech coverage is more important than simply producing high sound pressure levels.
The system offers a typical throw distance of up to 325 feet (100 meters), making it suitable for large rooms and extended coverage areas.
Modular Column Design
The ALX-48D uses a modular approach that makes large column arrays easier to transport and install. Identical modules can be combined to create arrays up to approximately 5 meters (16 feet) in height.
This modular construction can be particularly useful on large projects where transporting and handling a single extremely long loudspeaker enclosure would be difficult.
The aluminum enclosure provides a slim appearance that can integrate into architecturally sensitive environments without the visual bulk associated with conventional loudspeaker systems.
Networked Audio and System Control
The AtlasIED ALX-48D includes a range of professional audio and control connections, allowing it to integrate directly into modern networked AV systems.
Supported interfaces include:
-
Dante® / AES67 audio networking
-
AES/EBU digital audio
-
Analog line-level audio
-
IP network control
-
Real-time system telemetry and diagnostics
The loudspeaker can also integrate with the AtlasIED GLOBALCOM® GCK platform, making it suitable for paging, emergency communication, and mass notification applications where controlled and intelligible audio coverage is essential.
Flexible System Configuration
System designers can use up to 24 programmable presets to accommodate different room configurations or operating requirements. Beam steering coefficients can be uploaded quickly, allowing coverage adjustments without physically accessing or repositioning the loudspeaker.
The system also supports adjustable acoustic centers and multi-beam operation, providing additional control when covering complex spaces or multiple audience areas.
